Abstract
This video is part of the documentary series Aiuê: Listening to the Sounds of Quilombos, which presents a special edition on the Recôncavo Baiano. Produced by Coletivo Cacos, the series comprises four episodes set in the Recôncavo Baiano, a region located in the state of Bahia, Brazil. This is an area rich in identity, encompassing 20 cities and housing around 180 quilombola communities. The Recôncavo Baiano is a space of memory, ancestry, and a fight for the preservation of the rights and dignity of Afro-descendant people in Brazil, serving as one of the birthplaces of Afro-Brazilian culture.
The first episode of the series centers on “Territory and Rights Recognition,” highlighting the struggle for territorial rights, including the recognition of lands as quilombola areas, a key issue affecting most quilombola communities in Brazil. The episode illustrates how territory and identity are closely linked, both in terms of collective actions and individual subjectivities, through these communities’ profound connection with their lands, which are not just physical spaces but also the foundation of their traditions, culture, and survival. For the quilombola people, territory is synonymous with life and the continuity of ancestral culture.
