Abstract
This episode is part of the microseries “Aiuê: Listening to the Sounds of Quilombos,” produced by Brazilian documentary filmmakers who have worked to establish dialogues with quilombola communities and who have created an immersive experience that highlights the historical, political, cultural, economic and social importance of quilombos in Brazil. This video presents Quilombo Quingoma, located in the municipality of Lauro de Freitas, Bahia, which is one of the oldest quilombola communities in Brazil, with records of activities dating back to 1569. It is the first quilombo outside of Africa to receive the certificate of Yoruba territory, the main ethnic group in Nigeria - a title conferred by the “king” of Ifé, the city that is the birthplace of the Yoruba ethnic group in Nigeria. Despite its historical importance for the preservation of African customs and traditions in Brazil, Quingoma suffers from various forms of violence, racism, real estate speculation and environmental injustices.
