Abstract
This episode is part of the microseries “Aiuê: Listening to the Sounds of Quilombos,” produced by Brazilian documentary filmmakers who have worked to establish dialogues with quilombola communities and who have created an immersive experience that highlights the historical, political, cultural, economic and social importance of quilombos in Brazil. This video presents Quilombo do Dandá, a quilombo community located in the Brazilian municipality of Simões Filho, in the state of Bahia. Made up mainly of family farmers, the community has a long history of resistance and of fighting for rights, especially in the struggle for the recognition of territorial rights, as with the majority of quilombola communities in Brazil. Quilombo do Dandá is experiencing several difficulties due to poor implementation of public policies. For the purpose of collective organization in the search for better living conditions, residents created the Association of Quilombolas of Fazenda Coqueiro and Mata Grossa, which has its own headquarters where meetings and assemblies take place. Through the Association, projects are carried out to generate income, improve quality of life, advance development, and promote socio-environmental conservation. Despite all the challenges it faces in its survival, the community preserves several cultural manifestations of African origin, such as samba de roda.
