Abstract
This episode is part of the microseries “Aiuê: Listening to the Sounds of Quilombos,” produced by Brazilian documentary filmmakers who have worked to establish dialogues with quilombola communities and who have created an immersive experience that highlights the historical, political, cultural, economic and social importance of quilombos in Brazil. This video presents Quilombo do Tereré, located in Brazil, in the state of Bahia, in the municipality of Vera Cruz. It is a quilombola community formed, for the most part, by families who settled around a natural spring, called Fonte do Tereré. The community has a Quilombo do Tereré Association, through which a series of actions are developed to preserve the knowledge and practices of the community’s residents, with emphasis on the Museum of Living Memory of the Quilombos of Tereré and Maragojipinho. The Museum is a space for coexistence to strengthen social and collective memory, as well as the oral tradition, based on the protagonism of the community, its origins, histories, and values. The initiative offers classes in English, capoeira, samba de roda and other expressions of traditional art and culture of African origin.
