Abstract

Arisleyda’s work revolves around the body as it directly addresses the experiences and lived realities of intersex individuals in relation to their bodily identity. Intersexuality refers to the natural variation in sexual characteristics that do not fit into typical binary notions of masculinity and femininity. Through her video, Arisleyda explores the complexities and diversities of the intersex body, challenging established norms and promoting greater understanding and acceptance of bodily diversity. Her work aims to raise awareness about the unique experiences of intersex individuals, fostering inclusion and respect for body diversity.

“Mami y Yo y Mi Gallito” is a poignant exploration by artist Aris into her own identity and the complex dynamics of family, specifically focusing on her relationship with her mother. Over five years, Aris has persistently encouraged her mother to open up about deeply personal topics such as her childhood, body, and past and upcoming surgical decisions. It is a profoundly intimate and vulnerable endeavor captured on camera. In this film, Arisleyda, known as Aris, reveals that her motivation for undertaking this project goes beyond the surface level of documentation. She seeks to address and heal an internal rupture within herself. By candidly discussing her intersex body with her mother, Aris aims to reconcile and make sense of her own experiences and emotions surrounding her identity. Arisleyda’s artistic practice centers around documenting pivotal moments in her life and the lives of her family members. Through documentary filmmaking, she creates a space for participation and offers a platform for visual representation. By sharing her journey with audiences, Aris invites them to bear witness and engage in a dialogue that challenges preconceived notions about gender, identity, and family dynamics.
